How long should I study for the CFA® exam?
This is another question that we often hear from candidates. Although the CFA® Institute recommends 300 hours, how long you'll have to study depends on many factors:
1. Your Education
If you have a strong foundation in finance, accounting, economics and statistics you may not have to put in as many hours as a liberal arts major. However, start studying early and gauge your progress with practice exams. If you're scoring in the 70-75% range, you're making good progress.
2. Your Aptitude
If math isn't your strength, make sure to allot more study time to do plenty of practice problems.
3. Your Job
If you have a demanding job, it may be difficult to get in that much-needed study time during the week. Much of your study time may be limited to the weekends. Thus, plan accordingly. Start your study schedule well in advance (6-9 months or more) to accommodate your busy work schedule.
As previously mentioned, the CFA® Institute recommends approximately 300 total hours of study time. If you're wondering how long you have to study because you want to cut corners, be careful. Study notes and guides are great tools to use IN ADDITION to your studying to make your study time more efficient. However, these are not substitutes for doing the reading and practice problems. Good luck and happy studying!
