Can passing the CFA® exam help me get a job?
This is a question that we encounter on a regular basis. Understandably, you want to know if all the pain is worth it right?
Passing the CFA® exams alone won't guarantee you a job but it can help in your search.
Here are some things to think about:
1. Complete the CFA® to become a better finance practitioner. Don't begin the CFA® process simply to get a job.
You may be very disappointed. Although the designation may help you to stand out, employers will factor in your work experience (arguably more important than the designation), your education, as well as how well you interview.
2. Most candidates network into a good job
Don't fool yourself into believing that the job offers will come pouring in once you become a charterholder. Although it will help you be a more competitive candidate, remember to network actively as well. In fact, if you live in a major city, chances are that the CFA® Institute is hosting events near you. Also, don't forget to attend alumni and industry events.
3. Be focused in your job search
Now that you have your CFA® charter, you may be tempted to believe that employers will offer you everything under the sun. However, you must have a clear idea of specific roles that you are applying for. Try to focus on about three functions and learn everything you can - industry dynamics, current news & events, deals/transactions, just to name a few. Tailor your resume(s) to those fields.
Can having a CFA® help you get a job? In short, the CFA® plus the right experience, networking and preparation can help you get your next job (and, more importantly, help you become a better practitioner).
Good luck and happy studying!
